This project was born out of what was going to be a full demolition of the existing residence and a whole new build. The extensive nature of the new build, topography and budgets resulted in the owner happily rebuilding and retrofitting the existing David Swan designed home. The extent of the work included a fairly extensive rebuild with additions to the home and a full opening out with large stacking glass doors to take in the full expansive sea view out from Stanmore Bay, Whangaparaoa. The project was successful in the final outcome due in part to the owners brief and also to the collaborative approach of all involved, owner, architect, engineers and the building team. The collegism and supportive approach made for a great project that as with any retrofit was extensive and challenging but exceptionally rewarding. The result has been a ‘modern coastal’ home that takes full advantage of the surroundings and context.
